  • Conflict in darfur: peace talks between sudan's government and darfurian rebels collapsed three weeks ago. sudan accuses america of prolonging conflict by calling the actions of arab militias fighting in darfur genocide. to tell their story, rebels will meet olusegun obasanjo, the nigerian president.
  • U.s. presidential election. sue niederer, mother of a soldier who died in iraq, was arrested at a hamilton township, mercer county rally for firefighters. cnn.com cbs news
  • According to the u.s. military, the raids on fallujah by the u.s. killed at least 60 militants loyal to abu musab al-zarqawi. according to a spokesperson for iraq's health ministry, at least 17 children and two women were among those who were injured. at least 13 people are killed in a suicide car bomb attack in central baghdad.
  • Shamil basayev, a chechen warlord, claims that the massacre at beslan school was committed by a "martyr brigade" from riyadus–salikhin. he heads this group.
  • Colin powell, the u.s. secretary for state, spoke to al-arabiyya satellite tv network. he said that wednesday's state department report that listed saudi arabia as a country that restricts religious freedom was important and that he hopes to be able to use dialog to remove saudi arabia.
