• Russia: the un's response to the alleged attack is still premature. jordan insists that syria will not strike its soil.
• Lakhdar brahimi, united nations special envoy for syria, says that any military action against syria to respond to chemical attacks must be approved by the united nations security council. he adds that while i do not know what the american administration will decide, international law is very clear.
• Joe biden, the us vice president of operations, stated that there is no doubt that syria's government is responsible for the recent chemical attack on damascus.
• David cameron, the british prime minister, stated that the uk's national security council had agreed to not "stand by" following the "unacceptable" use of chemical weapons by syria's government. before taking any action, however, it is important to receive a complete report from the un on the chemical attack.
• Syrians living in damascus are racing against the clock to prepare for foreign strikes. many have hoarded supplies while others race to find accommodation farther away from potential targets.
• After the u.s. announced that russian and chinese officials had walked out of new york's un security council meeting, they left. samantha power, permanent representative of the united nations security council, calls for immediate action in relation to syria.
• Downing street publishes the uk government’s motion on syria. this motion proposes that mps wait for a un security council resolution before they vote on any military action.
• Un inspectors for chemical weapons resume their investigation in syria
• Syria's deputy foreign minister says the united states, britain, and france assisted "terrorists", using chemical weapons in syria. he also stated that these same groups would soon use them against europe.
• Britain is accused by syria's ambassador to the united nations of conspiring to aid rebel forces in carrying out the chemical attack on civilians in syria last week.
• Insurgency in iraq (post-u.s. withdrawal:: at least 51 people have been killed and many more injured in a series bombings and other attacks in and around baghdad.
• A series of bombings in and around baghdad has resulted in the deaths of at least 51 people and the injuries to dozens more.
• Construction crews are completing the replacement of the eastern span of san francisco bay bridge. the closure will be permanent. the new span will open tuesday.
• Nidal malik hazan, a former u.s. army major who was also a psychiatrist, is being sentenced to death in the fort hood massacre of november 5, 2009. the attack left 13 people dead and 32 wounded. an automatic appeal will be granted to him; the army general (convening power) can grant him life without parole. any military execution would require presidential approval.
• Iran continues to pursue the 1953 iranian coup-d'etat case. this was orchestrated in part by the us and britain at the international courts at the hague. the coup was officially acknowledged by the cia on august 20, 2013.
