  • 03 Mar 2013 2013 Lahad Datu standoff:: Fighting erupts in Sabah, Malaysia, leaving seven dead, including five policemen. Four people are taken hostage. The Malaysian Military responds by increasing their troop presence in that area.
  • 04 Mar 2013 Conflict in Northern Mali: French officials announced that a soldier died while fighting with Islamic militants this weekend. This is France's third casualty in Operation Serval since it began. (BBC). France claims it is "probable that al-Qaeda chief Abdelhamid Abou Zeid, Islamic Maghreb, was killed in Mali in February."
  • 05 Mar 2013 2013 Lahad Datu standoff :: In an attempt to end the standoff, the Malaysian Army launched an attack against an armed Filipino group located on Borneo.
  • 06 Mar 2013 Battle of Ar-Raqqah - Syrian rebels capture Ar-Raqqah. This is the first major city under rebel control during the civil war in Syria.
  • 07 Mar 2013 2013 Lahad Datu standoff :: At least 60 people have been killed in the conflict between Malaysian Armed Forces and the Sultanate of Sulu.
  • 08 Mar 2013 After being held hostage for ten months, the Greek-owned oil tanker MT Smyrni was taken hostage by Somalia's 26 crew members. They were released with a ransom of $9.5million.

  • 12 Mar 2013 Syrian civil war: 30 army deserters are killed by the Syrian Army in an ambush at Damascus Airport. (Reuters) The rebels have been captured by the Baba Amr district and the Syrian army has launched intensive air strikes against Homs.
  • 13 Mar 2013 2013 Srinagar Attack: Five Indian paramilitary troops are killed and three civilians are injured in a gun battle with two militants in Srinagar, Indian-administered Kashmir. Later, two militants were killed by CRPF.
  • 14 Mar 2013 Iraqi insurgency after the U.S. withdrawal: A series of suicide bombers and car bombers attack central Baghdad. This is followed by a militant attack against the Justice Ministry building. At least 25 people are injured and 7 police officers are killed.

  • 16 Mar 2013 British Lance Corporal James Ashworth, who was protecting his fellow soldiers from a grenade explosion in southern Afghanistan, died while trying to save them from the same fate in 2012. He will be presented with the Victoria Cross.

  • 24 Mar 2013 War on Terror: A suicide bomber attacks a Pakistani military checkpoint located in North Waziristan's tribal district, killing at most 17 soldiers.
  • 25 Mar 2013 (Al Jazeera) (Al Jazeera). South Africa's President Jacob Zuma claims that 13 of his soldiers were killed by rebels in the Central African Republic.
  • 26 Mar 2013 Australia has announced that it will close its Tarinkot base in Urozgan Province. The majority of troops will return home by the end this year.
