  • Conflict in iraq: baghdad governor ali al-haidri was assassinated during a roadside ambush.
  • Israeli-palestinian conflict: seven palestinians die when an israeli tank fires on agricultural land in the northern gaza strip. mahmoud abbas, the fatah leader and palestinian presidential candidate, responds to the deaths by launching a strong verbal attack against israel's "zionist enemy". six of the victims were members of the same family, one being an 11-year old boy. all of the victims were civilians under 18.
  • Antauro humala in peru, leader of movimiento etnocacerista turns himself in and ends the hostage crisis.
  • Algeria's government has announced a crackdown against the gia rebel group. nourredine boudiafi, its leader, was arrested. chaabane younes, his deputy, was also taken into custody.
  • Burundi's government forces and members from various armed groups start to unite to form a national armia.
  • Three members of the ruling united democratic front party in malawi were arrested after they brought guns to a meeting between bingu wa mutharika and them. later, they are released on bail.
