• At least 16 palestinians have been killed, including 2 children. officials in gaza claim that at least 150 people have been hurt since the israeli operation began.
• Two rockets were fired at tel aviv. one hit the water and one struck an uninhabited area of the city's suburbs. the incident was the first against tel aviv since 1991 gulf war.
• Unidentified gunmen stormed a police station in northern irbid to protest fuel price hikes. the incident resulted in the shooting death of a civilian aged 22, and injuring 13 officers and 4 protestors. reports of protests and looting sporadic are coming from al karak and salt, as well as madaba.
• (wall street journal) (bloomberg) bp has announced that it will plead guilty in the deepwater horizon oil spillage case to manslaughter and obstruction of congress charges. the company will also pay a total of us$4.5 million to the us department of justice and securities and exchange commission. (wall street journal) (bloomberg)separately, the two highest-ranking bp supervisors on board the deepwater horizon on the day of the explosion have been indicted on 23 criminal counts.
• Bp has announced that it will plead guilty in the manslaughter and obstruction of congress charges and will pay a total of us$4.5 million to the us department of justice and securities and exchange commission.
• Separately, 23 criminal charges were filed against the two top-ranking bp supervisors who were on board deepwater horizon the day of the explosion.
• After a union pacific train collided with a midland parade float, in midland texas, four people were killed and 17 more were injured, the midland train accident resulted in the deaths of 17 people.
• Police have taken a former bbc radio 1 disc jockey into custody in connection with the ongoing investigation into the jimmy savile sex abuse scandal.
• Xi jinping has been elected as the general secretary and chairman of central military commission of chinese communist party. he will also be the next leader of people's republic of china.
• The politburo standing committee also includes li keqiang and zhang dejiang.
• Xi jinping's first speech as general secretary is delivered in a style that is very different from hu jintao's.
• As a gesture of goodwill, the myanmar government has pardoned 452 prisoners in an amnesty. this was before president barack obama visited. the state media claimed that some of those released were foreigners. however, it is not known if there are any dissidents among them. human rights watch claims that the government uses strategically-timed prisoner release to appease international community.
• There are 41 police and crime commissioners elected in england and wales. there are also three by-elections in cardiff south, penarth and corby.
• Xi jinping becomes general secretary of the chinese communist party and a new seven-member politburo standing committee is inaugurated.
