  • A car bomb explodes near the marina hotel, sungai kolok in southern thailand. this popular tourist area is close to malaysia's border. five people are killed, and more than 40 others are injured. it is believed that the car bomb was the first to explode within the muslim-dominated area.
  • Four people were arrested in cork by irish police and three more in dublin. the raids focused on financing the provisional ira. more than 2.3 million sterling pounds were taken in cork. ps60,000 worth of northern bank notes was also taken. these notes are believed to have been from the ps26.5million robbery in belfast just prior christmas. according to reports, tom hanlon, a former sinn fein councillor, and someone who worked in the banking sector were among those arrested.   • Japan's chubu centrair international airport is opened in ise bay, south nagoya. the airport was built on an artificial island and is japan's third-largest international passenger airport. it is designed to replace the nearby nagoya airport.
  • New laws are introduced by the european union to increase air passenger rights. they can receive more compensation for cancellations, delays, and overbookings.
  • According to the bnfl nuclear power plant in sellafield, the united kingdom, 30 kg (66 lb.) of plutonium are "unaccounted for". this amount of plutonium missing would be enough to make seven nuclear bombs. according to the uk atomic energy authority, the discrepancy in record keeping was merely an auditing issue and there was no "real lose" of plutonium.
