  • 01 Aug 2014 Nagorno Karabakh conflict: At least eight Azeri soldiers were killed in clashes between Armenian troops and Azeri troops near the disputed Nagorno Karabakh region. Azerbaijan claimed that Armenia also suffered losses but did not give any details.
  • 02 Aug 2014 2014 pro-Russian unrest Ukraine: War In Donbass: Ukrainian forces retake the control of Krasnohorivka (and Staromykhailivka), outside of Donetsk, the stronghold of pro-Russian rebels.
  • 03 Aug 2014 Pro-Russian separatists from Donetsk are in grave danger of being encircled and repelled by the Ukrainian government forces. They have renewed their appeals to Russia for troops and arms.
  • 04 Aug 2014 Ukrainian government forces retook Yasynuvata's control from pro-Russian rebels. Government troops have now almost encircled Luhansk, the second-largest rebel stronghold. Rebels declared a "state under siege" in Donetsk.
  • 05 Aug 2014 War in Afghanistan: U.S. Major General Harold J. Greene, a German brigadier-general, and several American troops are among 15 injured in an attack by an Afghan soldier gunman at Kabul's Marshall Fahim National Defense University. He was shot and killed by Afghan soldiers. (MSN)(CNN),
  • 06 Aug 2014 Syrian Civil War: Saudi Arabia gives Lebanon US$1 Billion to aid in the conflict with self-declared terrorist fighters near the border with Syria.
  • 07 Aug 2014 The Islamic State seizes several cities that were inhabited primarily in Northern Iraq by Assyrian/Chaldean Christians, including Bakhdida and Qaraqosh. Thousands flee the city, while Sinjar is occupied by many Yazidis.
  • 08 Aug 2014 2014 Israel-Gaza Conflict: Hamas refuses to continue a 72-hour ceasefire, and has fired over 60 rockets into southern Israel since 8:00. Israel responds with air strikes
  • 09 Aug 2014 War in Donbass - Rebel commander Igor Girkin confirms the fact that Ukrainian government forces have retaken control of Krasnyi Luch from pro-Russian rebels. This effectively ends the Donetsk People's Republic insurgency. (BBC).Alexander Zakharchenko is the self-proclaimed prime minister for the Donetsk People's Republic rebel. He calls for a truce on humanitarian grounds, after admitting that Ukrainian government forces had entered the main insurgent stronghold at Donetsk.
  • 10 Aug 2014 2014 Israel-Gaza Conflict - Israel and Palestinian factions reach an agreement for a new 72-hour ceasefire. This was brokered by Egypt. It is scheduled to start at 21:00 GMT.
  • 11 Aug 2014 2014 Israel-Gaza Conflict: A 72-hour ceasefire is declared between Israel and Hamas, and talks to find a long-term solution begin in Cairo.
  • 12 Aug 2014 War in Donbass -: Ukrainian government forces retake control of Vuhlehirsk in Donetsk Oblast from pro-Russian rebels
  • 13 Aug 2014 Simone Camilli, Associated Press journalist and a freelance translator, was killed while trying to defuse unexploded explosives. Four Gaza police officers were also killed.
  • 14 Aug 2014 War in Donbass - Igor Girkin (a Russian citizen from Moscow who was the military commander of Donetsk People's Republic rebels) resigns. This marks the third major change to the rebel leadership over the past week.
  • 15 Aug 2014 Islamist insurgency: Suspected Islamist Boko Haram militants abducted dozens in Doron Baga (a remote sandy fishing village in northeast Nigeria, near Lake Chad).
  • 16 Aug 2014 War in Donbass -: Ukrainian government forces retake control of Zhdanivka, which was under attack by pro-Russian rebels.
  • 17 Aug 2014 Islamist insurgency: Chadian troops rescue 85 hostages taken by Boko Haram in Nigeria. They had been kidnapped and taken to the border with Chad.
  • 18 Aug 2014 War in Donbass - Ukrainian forces claim they have retaken control of Mala Ivanivka, Andrianivka from proRussian insurgents. This effectively makes Horlivka a rebel-controlled city.
  • 19 Aug 2014 War in Donbass - An American volunteer in Donbas Battalion is identified only as Franko, but he becomes the first foreign casualty in the conflict between pro-Russian insurgents and the Ukrainian government. (Kyiv Post). After retaking control of an important strategic section of the M-04 highway close to Luhansk, the Ukrainian government forces enter Stanytsia–Luhanska.
  • 20 Aug 2014 2014 Israel-Gaza conflict. Six hours before the cease-fire was to end, Israeli airstrikes killed 11 Palestinians. This includes the wife and infant son Hamas military leader Mohammed Deif. Hamas launched over 130 missiles against Israel that day. This is the eleventh cease-fire that was broken by rocket fire from Hamas. (BBC),
  • 21 Aug 2014 2014 Israel-Gaza Conflict: Three senior Hamas military commanders are killed by Israeli airstrikes. (AP) A senior Hamas official in Turkey praises Al-Qassam Brigades' role in the kidnapping and murder of three Israeli teens. An Israeli NGO appeals to the United States Attorney General for assistance in bringing the Turkish official to justice, as one of the teens was an American citizen.
  • 22 Aug 2014 Syrian Civil War: According to the United Nations, the death toll from Syria's civil war has increased to at least 191,000 over the past year.
  • 23 Aug 2014 The execution of four additional Palestinians accused of collaborating with Israel is publicly carried out outside Jabalia refugee camps by Hamas. Tayeb Abdel Rahim (secretary-general of PA), denounces the killings and compares them to ISIS.
  • 24 Aug 2014 Turkey is under intense international pressure after more than 18 months worth of requests to secure its borders from the influx foreign fighters, oil and weapons entering Syria to fight ISIS. ISIS fighters are moving towards the Turkey-Syria border with armored cars stolen from Iraqi military bases.
  • 25 Aug 2014 War in Donbass - Ukrainian forces claim they stopped a larger portion of a convoy consisting of approximately 50 armoured vehicles that entered Ukraine via the border with Russia, near Novoazovsk.
  • 26 Aug 2014 War in Donbass - Russia claims that the 10 armed Russian paratroopers captured in the night in Dzerkalne in Donetsk Oblast were only "mistakenly" entered Ukraine.
  • 27 Aug 2014 War in Donbass - Russian journalists claim they were attacked in Pskov's cemetery while looking into reports that Russian soldiers had been secretly buried in Ukraine after their deaths. (BBC). Pro-Russian separatists from eastern Ukraine try to get into the port at Novoazovsk and threaten to open a new front in war.
  • 28 Aug 2014 Deir Ezzor, a Syrian tribe, is facing genocide by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant. The tribe appeals to the world for help.
  • 29 Aug 2014 Syrian Civil War: According to the United Nations, three million Syrians are refugees abroad while another 6.5million are internally displaced. (Reuters) Syrian rebels attacked the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force on the Golan Heights, and captured 42 Fijian peacekeepers. They also surrounded a base manned 75 Filipino soldiers.
  • 30 Aug 2014 As the army stage a coup, Prime Minister Tom Thabane flees Lesotho to South Africa.
  • 31 Aug 2014 Syrian Civil War: 32 United Nations peacekeepers from Philippines were evacuated from the Golan Heights border crossing between Syria and Israel under fire, while others are still under fire by groups such as the Al-Nusra Front.
  • 02 Aug 2014 At least 146 people were killed and more than 114 injured in a factory explosion in Kunshan, Jiangsu, China.
