  • 01 Aug 2016 Afghanistan War (2001-present). The Taliban claim responsibility for the truck bombing at a military base in Kabul.
  • 02 Aug 2016 Syrian Civil War: A volunteer search and rescue team from the Syria Civil Defence says that 33 people were injured by toxic gas dropped from an unmanned helicopter onto Saraqeb, rebel-held Idlib Governorate.
  • 03 Aug 2016 The European Banking Authority supports the retention of a 3% leverage ratio in most European Union banks.
  • 04 Aug 2016 Syrian Civil War: At most 40 government airstrikes hit rebel-held areas in Aleppo city, and nearby towns. At least two people were killed by the strikes, which included one on an Atareb camp for displaced persons, south-west Aleppo. (The National) Jan Egeland, a UN special envoy to Syria says there were 44 attacks against hospitals, clinics, and health posts in Syria during July alone.
  • 05 Aug 2016 2016 Assam Attacks: Gunmen open fire on a Assam market, India. 13 people are killed and 18 are injured.
  • 06 Aug 2016 Syrian civil war: The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights claims 10 people were killed in an attack on a hospital in Milis, Syria's Idlib Province.
  • 07 Aug 2016 2016 stabbing of Charleroi officers by police: ISIL claims responsibility in the machete attack on Belgium.
  • 08 Aug 2016 2016 Ethiopian protests. More than 50 protesters were killed by Ethiopian security force forces in the past few days. The government blocked internet access and restricted journalistic access to the country.
  • 09 Aug 2016 Conflict between Israel and Palestine: Israel accuses a UN administrative manager that he was a Hamas-linked operative working from Gaza.
  • 10 Aug 2016 Ukrainian crisis: Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB), claims it has stopped two armed Ukrainian incursions in Crimea. At least one of the officers was killed after a "massive fight" with "sabotage terrorist" groups. The Russian claims are denied by Ukraine.
  • 11 Aug 2016 August 2016 Thailand bombings. Two bombs in plant pots explode, killing at least one person, and injuring ten others in Hua Hin District in Thailand.
  • 12 Aug 2016 August 2016 Thailand bombings The attacks were not claimed by any group.
  • 13 Aug 2016 Yemeni Civil War (2015): A bombing attack on a school in northern Yemen has resulted in the deaths of at least 10 children and 28 injuries. Houthi rebels claim that the Saudi Arabia-led coalition is responsible.
  • 14 Aug 2016 Yemeni Civil War: Around 40 Al-Qaeda in The Arabian Peninsula fighters are killed by Yemeni forces as they fight their way into eastern Yemen via Saudi-led airstrikes.
  • 15 Aug 2016 At least 11 people were killed in an airstrike by the Saudi-led coalition that struck a northern Yemen hospital run by Medecins Sans Frontieres.
  • 16 Aug 2016 To launch airstrikes against Syria, the Russian Air Force uses an Iranian Airbase near Hamadan.
  • 17 Aug 2016 During a counter-terrorism raid in Saint Petersburg, Russia on an apartment block, at least four North Caucasus Islamic militants were killed by Federal Security Service (FSB).
  • 18 Aug 2016 Conflict between Kurdish and Turkish Kurds (2015-present). Three bombings that targeted police and military killed at least 12 and left 219 people wounded in southeast Turkey.
  • 19 Aug 2016 Syrian civil war: Russian warships patrolling the Mediterranean Sea fire cruise missiles towards Aleppo. According to the Russian Defense Ministry, the strikes were directed at the Islamist militant group Jabhat Fateh al-Sham.
  • 20 Aug 2016 Gaziantep bombing. A suicide bomber attacks a Kurdish wedding celebration at Gaziantep in Turkey, killing at least 22 and wounding 94. (Reuters),
  • 21 Aug 2016 Somali Civil War (2009-present). A suicide car bomb by Al-Shabaab kills at least 20 people in Galkayo, Somalia's semi-autonomous Puntland.
  • 22 Aug 2016 2016 Pacific Typhoon Season: Typhoon Mindulle is expected to make landfall close to Tokyo, Japan. Train services and flights will be cancelled. It will arrive one day after Typhoon Kompasu. (Bloomberg),
  • 23 Aug 2016 Boko Haram insurgency. Nigeria's air force killed senior militants and possibly left their leader Abubakar Shekau dead.
  • 24 Aug 2016 Syrian civil war: US-backed rebels and the Turkish Armed Forces join forces to take Jarabulus from ISIL. To prevent ISIL from retaking areas they will not retreat from, the Turkish Land Forces are also bombarding YPG positions.
  • 25 Aug 2016 Philippine Drug War: Rodrigo Duterte's drug war has claimed 1,900 lives.
  • 26 Aug 2016 Kurdish-Turkish Conflict (1978-1999): Eight Turkish officers are killed and forty are injured by a bombing at a Cizre police checkpoint. The PKK is believed to have been responsible.
  • 27 Aug 2016 Paraguayan People's Army Insurgency: Eight Paraguayan Army Soldiers are killed by insurgents from the suspected Paraguayan People's Army EPP, just outside Arroyito in northern Paraguay.
  • 28 Aug 2016 Moro conflict: Supporters of the Islamic State of Iraq & the Levant are freed from a Marawi prison in the Philippines by Islamic State of Iraq & the Levant militants.
  • 29 Aug 2016 Conflict in Moro: 12 Philippine Army soldiers are killed during clashes against the Abu Sayyaf.
  • 30 Aug 2016 Sinjar massacre: Many Yazidi were killed in the massacre of 2014. ISIL discovered 72 mass graves.
  • 31 Aug 2016 After "proof" of two miracles, Mother Teresa of Calcutta will be made a saint.
