• Mikhail Bogdanov, Russia's Deputy Foreign Ministry, confirms that his country is working to mobilize plans to evacuate its citizens out of Syria. The statement acknowledges that the rebels may win, as the Syrian government loses more and more territory.
• A car bomb explodes in Qatana, 25km southwest of Damascus. It kills at least 16 people and injures 25 more. This attack comes after a similar explosion that occurred in front of the Interior Ministry building on Tuesday, which killed at least five people.

• Prosecutors request that a Manhattan federal court judge sentence Peter Madoff as brother and co-conspirator to the infamous fraudster Bernard Madoff to a ten year sentence.
• Tropical Cyclone Evan hits Apia, Samoa's capital. It causes at least two deaths and declares a state of emergency.
• Typhoon Bopha has caused more than 900 deaths in the Philippines, with many others still missing.
• The European Court of Human Rights ruled that Khalid El-Masri (a German citizen) was innocently subject to extraordinary rendition by Central Intelligence Agency. It orders Macedonia, after having arrested him, to pay him EUR60,000 and send him to the CIA. He was then taken to Afghanistan by CIA agents.
• Millions of assets belonging the Hosni Mubarak, former Egyptian dictator, are found. This includes Marbella beach properties as well as luxury cars.
• 2012 royal hoax: A Royal Inquest into Jacintha Saldanha's death: It is revealed that she was hanged to death. (The Independent) The media regulator Australian Communications and Media Authority opens an investigation into the 2Day FM prank call.

• Zdravko Tulipimir, a former Bosnian intelligence chief, was sentenced by ICTY to life imprisonment for his involvement in the Srebrenica massacre.
• U.S. U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice resigns from consideration to be U.S. Secretary Of State after increasing opposition to her nomination.
• The Bangladeshi Opposition is calling for a general strike to protest the restoration of a caretaker government. There are reports of clashes between police officers and protesters in Dhaka.
• The investigation by Britain's Parliamentary Commissar for Standards into Maria Miller's expenses is underway
• British government gives PS2.23 million to Sami al-Saadi's family. Sami al-Saadi was taken with MI-6 and forced onto a plane. He was then secretly flown to Tripoli where he was tortured by the security forces of former dictator Muammar Gadaffi.
• According to U.S. officials, North Korea's first satellite, Kwangmyongsong-3 unit 2, seems to be spinning out-of-control. South Korean sources later denied the report, stating that the satellite was orbiting Earth normal.
• NASA, the U.S. space agency admits that it published online a photo taken from the International Space Station showing an Indian mountain Saser Muztagh. It claimed it was Mount Everest. This left Nepalese netizens puzzled and it took a Nepalese expert from the country to point out the error.
• After a 3-1 victory over Monterrey, a Mexican team, Chelsea will face Brazil's Corinthians in this year's FIFA Club World Cup final.
• After Tigre, an Argentine club, refused to allow them to play in the second leg of the Copa Sudamericana, Sao Paulo FC were crowned Copa Sudamericana champions. They claimed that they were threatened by security officers at the Estadio do Morumbi which was not designated as a venue for the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
• Maurice Herzog, a French mountaineer who was the first to scale Annapurna at 8000m with Louis Lachenal, died in his 93rd year.
