  • George Tenet, Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, has resigned for "personal reasons". He will continue to serve as CIA director until mid-July. John McLaughlin will be the deputy director of the CIA and will serve as acting Director until a permanent Director can be chosen by Congress.
  • Two U.S. Marines were involved in the scandal of abuse of Iraqi prisoners. Andrew J. Sting, and Pfc. Jeremiah J. Trefney was sentenced to between 8 and 12 months in prison after pleading guilty for prisoner abuse at Al Mahmudiya, an Iraqi prison. This occurred following the events at Abu Ghraib.
  • The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries will increase output by 500,000 barrels per hour starting July 1, and by another 500,000 barrels each day (79,000 m/d) starting August 1.
