  • The White House released a February 7, 2002 memo by President George W. Bush in which he ordered humane treatment for captured Taliban and al Qaeda fighters despite a Justice Department legal opinion that it does not apply to the Geneva Convention. The Senate Democrats requested 21 other memos, but none have been released. No memos regarding Iraq or Abu-Ghraib Prison has been released.
  • Gordon B. Hinckley (15th president of LDS church), was awarded the presidential medal of Freedom by George W. Bush.
  • A memo from the U.S. Justice Department stating that the legal opinion stated that the president was "authorized to torture prisoners" is released by the U.S. Administration. This memo shows that Donald Rumsfeld rejected the approval of coercive physical measures. However, he approved "mild, not injurious physical contact" and the use of "detainees individual phobias (such fear of dogs).
  • The U.S. government claims that it has refused to allow torture even though this would be legal.
  • Federal Judge allows a class action lawsuit by unprecedented women in a case involving sexual discrimination at Wal Mart.
  • Iyad Allawi, Iraq's interim Prime Minster, vows to pursue militants who threaten to assassinate his government. He also dismissed their bloody campaign in advance of a U.S. handover of Iraqi control within a week.
