  • Robert Hanssen, an FBI agent, is arrested for spying on behalf of the Soviet Union. He is eventually convicted and sentenced for life imprisonment
  • NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt dies in an accident on the final lap of the Daytona 500. His DEI cars, driven by his son Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Michael Waltrip finish second and first, respectively.
  • In Sampit, Indonesia, Dayaks and Madurese engage in inter-ethnic violence that will eventually lead to more than 500 deaths and 100,000 Madurese being forced from their homes.
  • Robert Hanssen, an FBI agent, is being charged with spying on Russia for over 25 years.
  • Dale Earnhardt (NASCAR driver) is killed in an accident on the final lap of Daytona 500. He is known for being "The Intimidator" because of his aggressive driving style. On lap 173, Tony Stewart, a driver in NASCAR, flipped in midair and caused a major wreck. Because of debris on the track, the race came to an abrupt halt and required a 17-lap break. The red flag was raised to clean up the debris on the backstretch.
  • Major League Baseball Hall of Famer Eddie Mathews dies in La Jolla (California) from complications of pneumonia. Mathews is only Braves player to have ever played for the Atlanta, Milwaukee, and Boston teams. With 512 career home runs, he is tied for second with Ernie Banks.
