Syrian civil war: UN special envoy Lakhdar brahimi (Arab League) meets with Walid Muallem, Syrian Foreign Minister, Damascus to try to negotiate a temporary ceasefire for next week's Eid al-Adha holiday.
Authorities in Tripoli announce that Muammar Gaddafi has captured Moussa Ibrahim, the former spokesman of Muammar. He is located near Tarhouna 40 miles south-east of Tripoli. Ibrahim's location was unknown since 2011's civil war and several reports had previously reported his arrest. A few hours later, an audio message purporting to be from Ibrahim was posted online. It claims that he has not been captured and is even in Libya.
Siege of Bani Walid (2012) - Reports indicate that Khamis Gaddafi (the youngest son of Muammar Gadafi) was killed in the fighting at Bani Walid. Since the start of last year's civil conflict, the 29-year old has been declared dead multiple times.
The United Nations Security Council announced plans to impose sanctions against the leaders of the Democratic Republic of the Congo's M23 rebel group for violating an arms embargo.
Boko Haram members are suspected to have attacked Potiskum in northern Nigeria, causing destruction of several buildings and the deaths of at least 23 people.
9 people were killed in clashes overnight in southeastern Turkey, including 6 security personnel and 3 suspected Kurdish militants.
Following severe flooding, hundreds of pilgrims were forced to evacuate the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes (south France)
The SV Estelle is a schooner that is trying to break the Israeli blockade in Gaza. It claims to be carrying humanitarian aid. Israeli soldiers board the ship and it is diverted to Ashdod by Israeli navy ships. Israel denies any aid was found aboard. Passengers are unable to resist.
Noam Chomsky, a Jewish-American philosopher, linguist and human rights activist, visits Gaza for the first and attends a seminar with Gazan intellectuals and thinkers.
Tens of thousands march through London, Glasgow, and Belfast to protest the UK's austerity measures.
