  • Conflict in Iraq: Two US soldiers are killed when a helicopter crashes near Baquba (North of Baghdad).
  • A coalition of citizen groups has asked the United States Congress for a formal "Resolution of Inquiry," which is the first legal step in determining whether President George W. Bush committed impeachable offences. John C. Bonifaz is a Boston constitutional lawyer. The request cites the Downing Street Memo and other issues related to the planning and execution for the Iraq War.
  • The South African Geographical Names Council unanimously approved a recommendation to change Pretoria's name to Tshwane, the country's executive capital.
  • The President of the Palestinian Authority Abu Mazen was promised $50 million by the United States. He also reiterated Israel's commitment to cease all settlement activity in the West Bank.
  • British Association of University Teachers announces that it will cancel the boycott of Israeli Universities of Haifa & Bar-Ilan. After both internal and external debates over the original decision, the special meeting reached this decision. (BBC),
  • Charles Kennedy, British Liberal Democrat leader, calls for reform to the UK's voting system after Labour won the majority of seats in the UK election. However, Labour received only 35% of votes.

  • Arnaldo Obegi, the Basque leader of Herri Batasuna, is being held by a Spanish court for his links to ETA. Batasuna claims the move is detrimental to peace efforts. Otegi is currently in prison while he awaits?400.000 bail.
  • French authorities arrest Bislan Ismailov, a Chechen suspected of complicity with the murder of Theo van Gogh
  • With 83% of the vote in favor, Egypt's referendum supports constitutional changes to presidential elections.
  • The U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee approved a bill that would create a trust fund of $140 billion for the payment of asbestos claims. The Senate has now approved the bill. No similar bill is currently before the House of Representatives.
  • Five members of Tennessee's state legislature were arrested in federal bribery cases under Operation Tennessee Waltz.
