In India, the heatwave killed 90 individuals when the temperatures went above120 degrees Fahrenheit. Further, more than 160 died in Japan when temperatures topped 105 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • In the entertainment world, filmmaking heavyweights Quentin Tarantino, Martin Scorsese, and Greta Gerwig released several movies. They include The Irishman, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and Little Women.   • Apr 4, 2019: Libyan Civil War (2014-present), 2019 Western Libya Offensive. The Libyan National Army continues to advance on Tripoli, the capital of Libya. They have captured Gharyan with little resistance. General Khalifa Haitar ordered the LNA's seize of Tripoli. This prompted the Tripoli-based Presidential Council (which is responsible for general mobilization) to call for a general mobilization.

  • May 3, 2019: Sinclair Broadcast Group purchases Fox Sports Networks (FSN), from The Walt Disney Company, for $10.6 billion. The U.S. Justice Department ordered Disney to sell FSN in connection with its purchase of 21st Century Fox. This was due to antitrust concerns regarding its ownership of ESPN Inc.
  • May 4, 2019: At least nine people are killed in an attack on the forces loyal to Field Marshal Khalifa Haitar in Sabha (Libya), by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant. ISIL claims responsibility.
  • May 5, 2019: Gaza-Israel clashes (May 2019, Iran-Israel proxy Conflict: Hamas, Iran-Israel proxy conflict. Hamas and other militants in the Gaza Strip fire hundreds upon Israel. Two Israeli civilians were killed in Ashkelon and another in Ashdod. At least 23 Palestinians were killed in retaliatory Israeli strikes against Gaza, including a Hamas senior commander.
  • May 6, 2019: After six days of intense airstrikes in the area, the Syrian Arab Army launched a ground offensive against HTS-held areas in northern Hama (and southern Idlib) and NFL-held territories.
  • May 7, 2019: Second Libyan Civil War 2019, 2019 Western Libya offensive: A pro-GNA Mirage F1 fighter plane was shot down by the Libyan National Army over Tripoli. The pilot, who claimed to be Portuguese but his identity could not be confirmed by the Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, was captured and taken into custody. The LNA's media outlet released photos showing the injured pilot flanked and assisted by LNA officials.
  • May 8, 2019: 2019 Lahore Bombing: At least 11 people are killed in a blast near the Data Darbar Sufi shrine, Lahore (Pakistan), which is located at the 11th century. Half of these were police officers.
  • May 9, 2019: North Korean missile testing: South Korean military claims North Korea launched an "unidentified" projectile into the sea. This marks the second North Korean weapons test in one week.
  • May 10, 2019: Insurgency within the Maghreb (2002 to present): Four hostages held in northern Burkina Faso are freed by French naval commandos. Two French commandos were killed in the rescue operation. Two Frenchmen, who were kidnapped in Benin May 1, and two women, one American and one South Korean, were among those released.
  • May 11, 2019: Yemeni Civil War (2015-present). Houthi forces begin to pull out of several Yemeni ports including Al Hudaydah and As-Salif. This withdrawal is part of an UN-brokered ceasefire agreement that aims at ending the Yemeni blockade.
