• 2005 Liberian elections. Liberians vote in a presidential runoff election between George Weah, a millionaire soccer player, and former finance minister. Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf. Sirleaf wins 59.4 % to Weah’s 40.6 percent.
• 2005 United States elections. The governors of New Jersey and Virginia, Jon Corzine and Tim Kaine, both Democrats, were elected in the off-year election.
• 2005 civil unrest: The French President Jacques Chirac declares a State of Emergency on the 12th day of rioting within the banlieues. This was in response to the activation by a cabinet emergency session a 1955 law that allowed local authorities to impose curfews.
• Trial of Saddam Hussein - Three gunmen assassinate Adel Al-Zubeidi (defense lawyer for Taha Yassin Radadan), who was vice president of Iraq during Saddam Hussein's rule.
• RaiNews 24 in Italy, a state-owned channel, airs a controversial documentary that features ex-U.S. soldiers and Iraqi civilians reporting that the U.S. Army used white phosphorus and Mk77 napalm bombs against civilians in Fallujah last summer.
• 2005 Sydney terrorist plot: Nine men led by Abdul Nacer Benbrika were arrested by Australian authorities in a counterterrorism operation. Benbrika and six others are later convicted for terrorist-related offenses.
• According to the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), the Tokyo-based Institute of Cetacean Research will soon launch a controversial program that could see 940 whales killed in the name of scientific research. This would violate the International Whaling Convention rights.
