  • Witnesses reported seeing a Bottlenose whale swimming in River Thames. This was the first sighting of the species since 1913, when records started.
  • At 4 o’clock UTC, NASA's Pluto probe New Horizons reached the orbit of Moon eight hours and thirty-five seconds after its launch. This is a new Earth-to-Moon-distance flight record.
  • Three former employees of the Davis-Besse nuclear plant in Ohio were indicted on charges of repeatedly falsifying inspection reports, and other information to US Nuclear Regulatory Commission. FirstEnergy Corporation, the plant's owner, agrees to a plea deal and will pay fines instead of being charged with criminal offenses.
  • Excavating under Rome's Roman Forum, Italy, archeologists discovered a tomb that was 3000 years old. This tomb predates the creation of the Forum by several hundred years.
  • Canadian soldiers have successfully defused a large car bomb that was found near their Kandahar base. This discovery came just days after Glyn Berry, a suicide bomber in Canada, was killed and three soldiers were seriously injured by him.
  • Iran, embroiled in a nuclear standoff against the West, says it is moving money out of Europe to protect them from U.N sanctions.
