  • Oct 28th, 2018 Pittsburgh synagogue shoots: American online payments company PayPal bans Gab, a social media site that is associated with the alt-right movement. Joyent, Gab’s American hosting provider, says they will end their service tomorrow. After it was revealed that Robert Bowers was one of the 11 suspects in the deaths yesterday, the move was taken.
  • Oct 28th, 2017 28 October 2017 Mogadishu bombings. Two car bombs explode near Mogadishu's national theater, killing at least 25 people. This attack comes two weeks after hundreds were killed in a similar attack. Islamist group Al-Shabaab claims responsibility.
  • Oct 28th, 2016 Iraqi Civil War (2014-2017: Battle of Mosul (2016): UN reports that 232 civilians were killed in and around Mosul by the Islamic State of Iraq (and the Levant).
  • Oct 28th, 2015 Afghanistan War (2001-present). Taliban insurgents take the Darqad District, in the northeast Takhar Province close to the border with Tajikistan. Six Afghan soldiers are killed during the fighting. (Reuters) (AP via The Daily Mail). Secretary of State for Defence, Michael Fallon, announced that more than 400 troops would remain in Afghanistan until 2016. They will provide training for Afghan troops and support NATO operations in Kabul.

  • Oct 28th, 2013 Two Thai police officers are killed while trying to blow up a bomb in Narathiwat.
  • Oct 28th, 2012 Syrian civil war: Opposition activists have reported at least 128 deaths in the country as the UN-brokered ceasefire seems to be crumbling. At least 22 people were killed when the Syrian Army bombed three districts of Damascus and the city Bara near Idlib. (CNN/Reuters) Al Qaeda leader Ayman Al-Zawahiri promises support to the rebels in a new video posted to a jihadist site.
  • Oct 28th, 2011 Two people were injured when a Wahhabi Islamist, equipped with hand grenades, opened fire on the United States Embassy in Sarajevo.
  • Oct 28th, 2010 France says it will likely withdraw some troops from Afghanistan in 2011
  • Oct 28th, 2009 NASA launches a prototype Ares I-X rocket out of Florida in order to test technology that will be used to develop a future manned rocket. This launcher, valued at US$450 million, is the first NASA built in over 30 years.
  • Oct 28th, 2008 The Dow Jones Industrial Average gains 889.35 points or 10.88 percent to 9,065.12, making it its second-largest point gain.
