• At 87 years old, Aristides Pereira, the first president of Cape Verde, is killed in Portugal.
• The Italian Chamber of Deputies rejected a request to arrest Marco Milanese (a former aide of Giulio Tremonti Minister of Economy and Finance) on corruption charges.
• Tens of thousands protest against increased education spending in Chilean capital Santiago
• Shelly Yachimovich, a former television journalist, is elected head of the Israeli Labor Party.
• CERN scientists associated with the OPERA Experiment report experimental findings that seem to indicate neutrinos exceeding light speed.
