  • Space Shuttle Columbia launches for its last mission, STS-107. Columbia was destroyed 16 days later upon re-entry.
  • Bush makes a visit to the University of Scranton in Scranton, Pennsylvania to deliver a speech about medical liability reform in light of major medical malpractice cases in northeastern Pennsylvania. Bush criticised state attorneys for 'frivolous lawsuitsampquot and promised to reduce excessive jury awards and put a cap of $250,000 on non-economic damages. Later, the president paid a visit at Scranton Mercy Hospital.
  • US Senator Russ Feingold proposes a bill that would stop the Information Awareness Office (and Total Information Awareness) until a review of privacy concerns is completed. It is unusual for the US Congress to attempt to suspend an internal Department of Defense program.
  • UN weapons inspectors in Iraq reported that they found empty rocket-warheads designed to carry chemical warfare agents at the Ukhaider Ammunition Storage Area.
  • Space Shuttle Columbia launches for its final mission STS-107. It was destroyed upon re-entry 16 day later.
