  • Coalbrook Mine Disaster A catastrophic rock fall and mine collapse occurred at the Clydesdale Coalbrook North Colliery near Sasolburg, South Africa. The disaster trapped 437 miners underground, with 417 ultimately dying from methane poisoning. The collapse was severe, causing air pressure damage to the main ventilation system and cutting off fresh air supply. Rescue efforts over 11 days were ultimately unsuccessful due to extensive flooding and high methane concentrations.
