The devastating raid resulted in approximately 3,000 civilian and military casualties, marking a significant escalation in the Allied strategic bombing campaign against Axis-controlled territories.
  • Hitler-Mussolini Strategic Meeting in Feltre On the same day as the Rome bombing, Italian dictator Benito Mussolini met with Adolf Hitler in the northern Italian town of Feltre. Despite the critical military situation, Mussolini did not discuss Italy's potential withdrawal from the war. Instead, the leaders agreed to implement a strategic fighting withdrawal in Italy and establish the defensive Gustav Line, a 72-mile fortification stretching from the Garigliano river mouth to the River Sangro south of Ortona.
